Tilman Esslinger is Professor of Quantum Optics at the Physics Department of ETH Zurich. He graduated from Ludwig-Maximilians-University of Munich, from where he also received his PhD. He pioneered continuous wave atom lasing and the superfluid to Mott-insulator transition in a quantum gas. At ETH Zurich he and his team synthetically create and study key Hamiltonians describing the inner workings of nature at the quantum level. Major breakthroughs were the realizations of the first fermionic Hubbard model, the observation of the Dicke phase transition in matter-light interaction and the creation of Haldane’s model for a topological Chern insulator. A new branch of research is the measurement of conductance’s in quantum gases, where he and his team demonstrated the equivalent of the thermoelectric effect and observed for the first-time quantized conductance’s in neutral matter.
