William Phillips is a Distinguished University and College Park Professor of physics, University of Maryland, member of the Joint Quantum Institute and National Institute of Standards and Technology. In 1997 he was a co-recipient of the Nobel Prize of Physics "for development of methods to cool and trap atoms with laser light.” This was an essential step on the path to achieving Bose-Einstein condensation in atomic gases. Recently, Prof Phillips use ultra-cold atoms to study a variety of problems including quantum simulation, quantum information processing, and atomtronics. He is fellow of the American Physical Society, a Fellow and Honorary Member of the Optical Society of America and a Member of the National Academy of Sciences.
